Malabar Wedding

Director: Rajesh-Faizal
Cast: Indrajith, Gopika, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Maamukkoya, Bijukuttan
Year: 2008

I watched this movie with very low expectations, but was pleasantly surprised. The movie is based on a practice called "Sora Kalyanam" in Malabar, where friends play merciless pranks on the groom with the intention of embarassing him in front of his new bride. These pranks are usually payback for similar pranks played by the groom.

The movie opens with Satheeshan (Suraj) dreaming about a prank he pulled on Avookka (Mamookkoya) at his wedding three years ago. Now Satheeshan's wedding's fixed and he knows that it's payback time.
His friends pay him back with interest, and the scenes here are hilarious.

The leader of the pack of pranksters is Manikuttan played by Indrajith, whose wedding is next. The rest of the movie is the lead up to Manikuttan's sora kalyanam, which is even more hilarious.

The ensemble cast of village characters and belly-aching comedy are reminiscent of movies like Pradeshika Varthakal (പ്രാദേശിക വാര്‍ത്തകള്‍) and Peruvennapurathe Visheshangal (പെരുവെണ്ണാപുരത്തെ വിശേഷങ്ങള്‍). And like those classics, the climax here is also cobbled together, probably because the writers spent so much time on the jokes and dialogues, they just didn't have the time or care to devote to developing a good climax. However, the weak climax doesn't take away too much from the movie, because the rest is really good.
