Trailer

According to Wikipedia, this movie is "an uncredited remake of the 2000 Argentine film Nine Queens ". I haven't seen the original, but I'm sure this malayalam remake doesn't hold a candle to it. But since I watched Gulumaal without any preconceptions, I found it to be pretty entertaining.

I'd classify it as a slapstick comedy with a lot of unusual twists and a totally unexpected climax. Jayasurya plays an anti-hero character -- a con man with no conscience. Actually he's a villain, because he has no saving grace. But being a comical character played by Jayasurya, it's difficult to think of him as a villain. Kunchacko is pretty good as Jayasurya's partner. He is the foil to Jayasurya's character -- a con man with a conscience.

Suraj plays an "Inspector Clouseau" type of police officer, hot on the trail of the two con men, who he's convinced are dangerous terrorists. This is typical Suraj -- a lot of mimicry style ad libbing and infantile humor. But I found myself laughing anyway. I especially loved the scene where he gets into a car to make a chase and discovers that it's a driving school car taught by an old "aashan", and the car moves at a snail's pace.

Overall, it's a decent entertainer. I laughed a lot, and I loved the climax.
